London, Typis Richardi Bishopii & Jacobi Junii, impensis Laurentii Sadleri, Bibliopolae, commorantis in vico vulgo vocato Little Britaine., 1644. 4to. (40), 264, 252, (24) pp. Small portion cut from lower corner first flyleaf, title with some inkmarks and stamp former owner, first few leaves stained along edges, a few spots incidentally throughout, at the end some tiny wormholes. Contemp. leather, goldprinted spine, heavily worn, inner-hinge frontcover loosening. First edition. Arnold Boate, or Arnold de Boot 1606-1653, studied Hebrew and medicine at the univ. of Leiden. After his doctorate in medicine in 1630 he became a practitioner in England and Ireland. In 1644 Boot left Ireland for Paris. In the same year he published the present book in London, which he presents as the result of 20 years of studying the Hebrew Bible and its rabbinic commentators. In Paris he devoted all of his time to biblical studies, publishing in 1640 his pamphlet against Cappellus and in 1653 a larger work vindicating the Hebraica veritas against Morinus and Cappellus. The Animadversiones abound in Hebrew words and phrases in Hebrew type, being an early example of Hebrew printing in London. Latin - Bible - See NNBW 4, p. 211. Pictures will be sent upon request.
