D. thesis published in the same year, being a study of some aspects of the wayang theatre of Java, based in part on the results of a survey among the civil servants in Java and Madura concerning the kind(s) of wayang theatre in their respective regions. Discussed are: a genealogy of the wayangpurwa, with an extention into the period covered by the wayang gedog and the wayang krucil. In this commercial edition the description of the puppets of the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, the complete collection of plates of the wayang purwa and the genealogical tables has been suppressed. The original thesis with the plate-volume is very difficult to locate and fetches very high prices; this edn. is a good 'replacement', also of great rarity. Very good copy.
