Personal memoirs memoirs of Mien Sudarpo, born in 1924 from a sundanese father R.A.A.M. Wiranatakoesoemah, the regent of Bandung, and a Minangkabau mother Syarifah Nagawi, daughter of a wellknown teacher in Bukittinggi. Her father divorced her mother when she was three month old, and she spent most of her childhood in Fort de Kock (Bukittinggi) and her adolescent years in Batavia (Jakarta). She experienced the Japanese occupation and witnessed the struggle for Independence. She married Soedarpo Sastrosatomo in March 1947, who then in May 1948 was sent to New York to join the Indonesian delegation to the U.N. Security Council in the negotiations for the recognition of the Republic of Indonesia. She joined him in September 1948, and lived in New york and Washington D.C. until Febrary 1952. Returning home in 1952, her husband quit the Foreign Service and went into private bussiness. In October 1952 the together established a trading firm Soedarpo Corporation, which is still operating up to this day. In 1974 she joined the Women's International Club and in 1978 she was elected president of the Women's International Club until 1980. She served the Women's International Club for a second term in 1988 till 1990. She has now 3 married daughters all with a profession and 6 grandchildern.
