Although almost every smoker is convinced that smoking is a riskful habit, and although many of them want to quit smoking, smoking cessation programmes are only moderately successful. Therefore, it has been proposed that smoking prevention in adolescents might well be a more effective way to reduce the number of smokers. Leventhal and colleagues have developed a smoking prevention programme which, in contrast to existing smoking prevention programmes, focuses on the emotional aspects of dealing with riskful situations. In this programme the personal experiences of adolescents with situations they have regretted are tied to future smoking<br />situations. In this book, the programme is evaluated. Furthermore, a research model regarding factors which contribute to the development of smoking behaviour is presented.
