Zeventig jaar na zijn oprichting in Weimar is het Bauhaus wereldwijd een begrip. De naam Bauhaus geniet grote waardering, vooral door het aldaar ontwikkelde design; daarvoor is enigszins simplificerend het woord Bauhausstijl ingeburgerd geraakt. De namen van de bij het Bauhaus werkzame leerkrachten werden tot een legende. Enkele van hen - bijvoorbeeld Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee en Oskar Schlemmer - behoorden tot de meest vooraanstaande kunstenaars van hun tijd. De reformpedagogische doelstellingen van het Bauhaus, zoals ze in het bijzonder door Johannes Itten, Josef Albers en L?szl? Moholy-Nagy waren ontwikkeld, werden internationaal in de opleidingsprogramma's van hogescholen voor kunst en vormgeving opgenomen. Aan de andere kant wordt de Bauhausarchitectuur, die door het werk van Walter Gropius en Ludwig Mies van der Rohe tot de avant-garde van het Nieuwe Bouwen in de jaren twintig behoorde, niet zelden verantwoordelijk gesteld voor de onleefbaarheid van onze steden, voor de vernietiging van het landschap door eentonige containerarchitectuur en zielloze grote stadswijken.
