Paperback Essays on English Literature, Philosophy, and Culture
This book brings together seventeen short articles devoted to English literature, written on the occasion of the retirement of Professor Guido Kums (English Literature) and Professor Hugo Roeffaers S.J. (English Literature and Philosophy), both of whom took leave of the Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen in September 2003, on the eve of the merger forming one University of Antwerp. Alongside great classics from the beginning of the twentieth century such as Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (A. Heywood-Kenny), T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land (D. Conlon), James Joyce's Finnegans Wake (G. Lernout) also more recent novels are discussed, like Lawrence Durrell's The Alexandria Quartet (J. Duytschaever), Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (L. Herman), and Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake (H. Staels), as well as lesser known works such as the writings of Mary, Queen of Scots (K. Daemen-de Gelder) and Malcolm Lowry's film scenario for F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night (E. Bekers). Light is also thrown on the intertextual methods of composition of Samuel Beckett (D. Van Hulle), the medieval appropriation and adaptation strategies recognisable in the filming of A.S. Byatt's Possession (M. Cré), and the idiosyncratic dramaturgy of Robert Wilson's opera Einstein On The Beach (C. Neutjens). Some authors opted for a philosophical approach to literary figures such as Iris Murdoch (D. Phillips), David Lodge (H. Simissen) and Philip Larkin (G. Vanheeswijk) or, conversely, chose to offer a glimpse of Wittgenstein as a literary patron (J. Leilich). From the linguistic perspective glances there is a look at Shakespeare's use of stress in As You Like It (L. Goossens) and at Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem Jabberwocky (G. Tops). These literary articles are complemented by some official and some less official comments on both of their academic careers.
