Shaping Transport Policy has a dual ambition. It gives the reader a panoramic overview in a comparative perspective, and for policy makers, it provides lessons learned that are relevant to current transport policy issues. This book is the first transport history that compares the development of major transport systems between 1830 and 2000 in seven countries: the USA, the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. The scope of this book is thus unique.<br /><br />Two centuries of struggle between the public and private sector - A comparative perspective. The study covers the development of the railway networks in the 19th century, the rise and decline of the urban tramways around 1900, the role of the truck in freight transport between 1910 and 2000, the emergence of bus transport between 1920 and 1940, transport mode policies in the interbellum, and the spread of car mobility since 1900.<br /><br />The author, Ruud Filarski, is indebted to his co-worker Gijs Mom and to the stimulating project workshop contributions by more than 50 experts from a dozen countries.
