Paperback The importance of involving actors from society in solving the unstructured problems such as those concerning global environmental change has gained wider recognition in recent decades. The participation of these 'stakeholders´ may lead to better decisions, increase awareness and support, and enhance the legitimacy and accountability of decision making. At the same time, however, there are many critics who oppose the involvement of stakeholders. This book considers stakeholder participation to be important and enriching for problem-solving processes, but it also argues that, to increase its value, the participatory methodology needs to be improved.

As a contribution to the strengthening of participatory methodology, Debating Climate Change evaluates the case of the Dutch Climate OptiOns for the Long term (cool) project. This involved 56 stakeholders from different sectors of the Dutch economy who met in groups to develop strategic insights for Dutch climate policy making. The book identifies a number of issues that may be helpful for practitioners of participatory projects to take into account. It proposes to use 'learning´ and 'argumentation´ as guiding concepts for the design and evaluation of participatory methodology. Furthermore, it provides interesting insights into the use of specific participatory methods, such as future images, interactive backcasting, and repertory grid analysis; and into the factors that may encourage or hamper processes of argumentation and learning.

Debating Climate Change will be of interest to researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders who are involved in participatory processes in the field of climate change or other environmental issues.
