Oxford, Clarendon Press. 1988, First Edition. (ISBN: 0198295006) Hard Cover. In excellent condition. No markings. Unread, sad to say. The purpose of this book is to trace trends in the most relevant aspects of household modelling. Part I comprises a number of preliminaries. Chapter 1 is an introduction, and chapter 2 tackles the problem of defining the concepts of the household and the family. Chapter 3 approaches the subject from an economic point of view, with a concise overview of several economic theories which tries to explain demographic trends related to family and household formation. Part II contains a combination of data and trends. Chapter 4 argues that data from static models are not suited to describing processes of household formation and dissolution. Chapter 5 considers 3 types of special samples surveys suitable for the execution of dynamic household models. Part II also reviews how the data produced during a longitudinal sample survey in Great Britain can be used to study the changes in household states between 1971 and 1981. Chapter 6 describes and analyzes household trends in Europe after World War II. Part III looks at the modelling aspects of households. Chapter 7 treats the basic principles of household modelling. Chapter 8 reviews static household models, and chapter 9 reviews dynamic ones. Chapter 10 describes a macrosimulation model which is being developed in West Germany. Part IV examines the practical applications of household models. Chapter 12 describes the construction of the so-called family life cycle tables, which overcomes some of their shortcomings. Chapter 13 uses the headship rate method to analyze the future household situation of the aged in Hungary. Chapter 14 discusses the role played by household trends in regional planning. Chapter 15 describes the application of a dynamic macromodel used to construct household projections in the Netherlands. Part V contains a few critical remarks as well as general conclusions on modelling household formation and dissolution Chapter 16 critically analyzes the subject, and chapter 17 presents a number of methodological problems related to dynamic household models. Fine/Very Good.
