Sinds de prehistorie heeft de zee een belangrijke rol gespeeld in het leven van de mens. In het geval van de Oostzee hadden de zeevarende volkeren via de Golf van Finland en de rivieren op de Karelische landengte toegang tot de handelsroutes naar het Verre Oosten. De Botnische Golf leidt naar Lapland en het arctische gebied, en in het westen kon men via het Kattegat en het Skagerrak de Noordzee bereiken.<br /><br />De Oostzeekusten vormen de geografische focus van de essays in dit boek. Daarbij is het centrale thema de contacten en handelsbetrekkingen tussen de bewoners van de Baltische kusten en Nederland. De bestudeerde tijdsperiode ligt tussen 1523, toen een einde kwam aan een serie van personele unies die Denemarken, Noorwegen en Zweden verenigde, en 1814, toen het Verdrag van Kiel werd ondertekend, bij welke de Deens-Noorse personele unie werd vervangen door de Noors-Zweedse unie.
