Fransen van de Putte, dealing with the abolition of the [V.O.C.] Spice-monopoly in 1864 in the Moluccas, focused upon the Banda Island Group. Author describes in extenso the more favorable position of the so-called Perkeniers and of local Bandanese peasants growing spices. He concludes that the socio-economic position is strongly upgraded and that the previous appalling poverty amongst the indigenous growers has disappeared. He also supplies, i.a. information on the local population: customs and means of subsistence, political development, local administration and taxation, &c. Good copy. Rare. (small paper ex-lib. label in upper right corner of front wrapper).
