Art on traffic roundabouts - in other words, more or less monumental sculpture - has for some decades counted among the most noticeable art forms in public spaces. Since the early 1990s, the number of roundabouts in Flanders has increased exponentially: for reasons of traffic safety and greater mobility, traffic roundabouts are gaining increasing preference over traditional junctions with traffic lights.<br /> <br /> In 2005, the Vlaamse Bouwmeester art team commisiones eight visual artists from Belgium and abroad to elaborate an artistic proposal for a traffic roundabout. The eight proposals are made by: Francis Alÿs, John Bock, Lili Dujourie, Jimmie Durham, Jef Geys, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Manfred Pernice and Ettore Spalletti.
