This second study in the Community Drug Use Studies Series reports on an extremely innovative evaluation of rational drug use activities in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan. The study focuses on a range of activities that aim at enhancing appropriate medicine use. The activities are conducted by a Non-Government Health Program, Aga Khan Health Services, that operates in the Northern Areas of Pakistan, and by the Government of Pakistan. The study gives a detailed account of drug use and provision patterns, and meanings attributed to medicines. Against this background the process of the interventions is described, and the outcome in terms of appropriate use of medicines by consumers assessed. Unique is the systematic attempt of the researchers to involve all actors in the formulation of recommendations for action based on the study results.
