WALL DRAWINGS BY SOL LEWITT of This catalogue raisonné accompanied the Sol Le Witt retrospective at the Kunsthalle Bern in 1989 for which Wall Drawings of the past five years had been drawn It was the third time that Sol LeWitt exhibited at the Kunsthalle. In 1969 he participated with one of his very earliest Wall Drawings. WD 12, in the exhibition " When Attitudes Become Form," an early and comprehensive presentation of conceptual art in Europe. In that Wall Drawing vertical and horizontal lines as well as diagonals from right to left and from left to right were drawn in pencil immediately onto a wall. The Wall Drawing was divided into four times sixteen squares arranged according to a certain principle of rotation; moreover, in one half of the squares the lines were systematically superimposed. Thus, LeWitt made use of an elementary graphic vocabulary that he had already used in his very first Wall Drawing, applying it in a finite series of permutations and superimpositions Using this same pattern, LeWitt also made an autonomous pen and ink drawing on paper. Indeed, in most of his Wall Drawings he used the surface of a wall as just another support for a drawing, basically in analogy to a sheet of drawing paper. Architectural aspects were of no particular interest. According to Le Witt, the main point of drawing immediately onto a wall was to achieve the greatest possible two-dimensionality of a drawing. To draw onto a wall, to inscribe the wall with lines, appeared to be one way of avoiding any illusion. The predominant concern was to exclude the various frames and supports of a work of art instead of a drawing on paper behind glass in a frame on a wall, there would simply be a drawing on a wall.
