This booklet is the result of an interest in the portrayal of veiled women from North Africa and the Near East during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the images used also form part of an exhibition about the history and development of veiling, which is to be staged at the national Museum of Ethnology. leiden, The Netherlands (from October 1996 to May 1997). One thing which became clear while preparing the veiling exhibitions is that while old protographs can be a useful source of information about traditional forms of clothing and the way in which they were worn, the viewer still has to be very careful. There are many hidden pitfalls, not least of which is finding out about who was taking the photographs, who was being photographed and perhaps more importantly, why. This booklet is intended to offer some insights into a number of problems which may be encountered while using old images, especially those showing women from the Near East. Unfortunately it is not feasible here
