Lying out a garden is a very personal affair. The garden is the domain of the amateur in the true sense of the word; it may originate from a design, but ultimately it remains the material result of a continuous process of both controlling and abstaining from intervening. The conintuous care for the garden can be regarded as realisations of a primary need to give shape to an individual habitat. By making a garden we create the conditions for the inhabitability of a place. Yet, whereas built structures seem to lend themselves to be envisaged and designed to suit a defined ideal, gardens remain forever unfinished projects.
