Gelatt, V.M.D.Why a textbook on veterinary ophthalmology? Many veterinarians and visual scientists during the past several decades have contributed significantly to the veterinary and comparative ophthalmic literature. Unfortunately, these publications are scattered through the world literature and are often difficult to recover. The two current textbooks published in English concentrate on the dog’s eye. Other recent books emphasize ocular fundus diseases, ophthalmic surgery, pathology, and stereophotographs of ophthalmic disorders. Our objective was to collect and distill into one reference the world literature on diseases and surgery of the eye and orbit of domestic animals. We chose to concentrate on ophthalmic diseases and surgery in the dog, cat, horse, and food and laboratory animals. Each chapter is designed to provide in-depth information supplemented with adequate illustrations and references for practicing veterinarians, veterinary medical and graduate students, veterinary ophthalmologists, and visual scientists. Of particular interest to the visual scientist is the large number of potential biomedical animal models for vision research.
